Key decision factors
- NACS vs CCS — Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) is now the de-facto standard. Most new non-Tesla EVs ship with NACS ports or include adapters. Electrify America and EVgo still have CCS stalls; the map is shrinking.
- Membership pricing — Most networks charge 10–20% less if you are a member. The annual fee is $4–$13/month. If you road-trip once a quarter, the membership pays for itself on one long charge.
- App vs plug-and-charge — Tesla is seamless (plug in, walk away). Electrify America and EVgo require an app or RFID card. ChargePoint and Blink are app-heavy. If you hate phone apps, Tesla or a network with good plug-and-charge support wins.
- Reliability in winter — Cold weather reduces charging speed and some stations go offline. Tesla has the best uptime data; Electrify America is improving but still has rural gaps.
Rule of thumb: if you own a Tesla, Superchargers are the default. If you own a non-Tesla EV with NACS, Superchargers are still the most reliable option on long trips — download the Tesla app and add a payment method. For short errands, ChargePoint at the mall or grocery store is usually fine.
