A 240V outlet is the cheapest way to add home charging. A hardwired Level 2 charger is faster, safer, and future-proof. Most PHEV and EV drivers end up with the hardwired option after the first year. Here is why, and what it actually costs.

Cost breakdown (typical suburban home)

  • Electrical panel upgrade — If your panel is 100A or older, adding a 40–60A circuit may require a 200A upgrade ($1,500–$3,000). Many 1990s+ homes already have 200A.
  • Wire run — 40–60 ft of 6/3 or 8/3 Romex or conduit from panel to garage: $200–$600 depending on distance and whether you trench or run along the wall.
  • Breaker + outlet or charger — 50A breaker + NEMA 14-50 outlet: $150–$300. Hardwired charger (ChargePoint, Emporia, Tesla Wall Connector): $500–$1,200.
  • Permit + inspection — $50–$200 depending on jurisdiction. Some cities waive for EVSE.
  • Total (no panel upgrade) — $300–$800 for outlet; $800–$2,000 for hardwired charger.
  • Total (with panel upgrade) — $2,000–$4,000 either way.
Rule of thumb: if you plan to keep the car 3+ years and can charge at home most nights, spend the extra $500–$1,000 for a hardwired charger. It is safer (no plug to loosen), faster to start a session (no fumbling with a cord), and adds resale value when you sell the house.

Permit and code notes

  • Most jurisdictions treat EVSE as a "continuous load" and require a 125% derate on the circuit. A 40A charger needs a 50A breaker and wire.
  • Outdoor installations need a weatherproof enclosure and GFCI protection (some chargers include it; some do not).
  • If you are in an HOA or rental, check the rules before you dig. Some HOAs require architectural review; some states (California, Colorado) have "right to charge" laws that override HOA bans.
