What costs less
- Brake pads and rotors — Regen handles low-speed braking, so friction brakes see far less use. Many hybrids go 100k+ miles on the original pads.
- Starter and alternator — The hybrid system replaces both. No separate starter to fail at 80k miles.
- Idling wear — The engine shuts off at stops, so cylinder wear from idling is reduced.
What costs more
- Tires — Hybrids weigh 200–400 lb more than gas siblings and often run low-rolling-resistance tires that are pricier.
- Inverter coolant service — A new fluid category; some shops are not set up for it yet.
- Diagnostic time — "Check hybrid system" warnings often require a dealer-level scan tool. Independent shops may charge more or refuse.
