The hybrid battery is the most expensive single component on the car. The good news: it is warrantied for a long time. The bad news: terms vary by brand, state, and model year. Here is what is covered, what voids it, and what a replacement costs if you are on your own.

On What Is The Hybri we tell buyers to read the warranty card before the window sticker. A 10-year/150k-mile California battery warranty on the same car you buy in Texas can be 8-year/100k. The coverage is a function of where you register the car, not where you bought it.

What "CARB state" means

States that follow California Air Resources Board (CARB) rules require longer hybrid battery warranties. As of 2026 the CARB states are California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia. If you buy a car new in one of these states (or move there within the warranty period on some brands), you get the longer coverage.

What voids the warranty

  • Modifications to the hybrid system — Aftermarket battery "tuners," DC fast charging on a PHEV that does not support it, or swapping modules outside a certified shop.
  • Neglected cooling service — Inverter and battery coolant must be changed on schedule (usually 100k–150k miles). Skip it and a heat-related failure may not be covered.
  • Saltwater or flood damage — High-voltage systems and water do not mix. Flooded cars are usually a total write-off.
  • Track use or commercial use — Some warranties exclude livery (Uber, Lyft) or track use. Read the fine print if you drive for a living.
Rule of thumb: if you are buying used, ask the dealer to print the warranty status from the VIN. Coverage is usually transferable to the second owner, but thedegradation clause (the "below 70% capacity" part) sometimes is not. That is the clause that protects you from a slow, expensive fade.
