State hybrid incentives 2026

The federal credit is only half the story. Some states add $1,000–$5,000 cash rebates, HOV lane access for solo drivers, and reduced or waived registration fees. Others do nothing or have sunsetted their programs. Here is the landscape that actually moves the needle.

On What Is The Hybri we track state programs because a $2,000 state rebate on top of a $3,750 federal credit changes the math on a PHEV. Programs change annually and some are first-come, first-served. Check the state energy office website before you count on it.

Stacking rules

  • Most states allow stacking the state rebate with the federal credit. A few (Colorado, Oregon) treat the federal credit as income that reduces your state rebate.
  • Some states require the car to be purchased from an in-state dealer. Buying out of state can disqualify you.
  • Used EV credits usually have tighter income caps and lower dollar amounts than new-car programs.
Rule of thumb: if you live in a state with a $2,000+ rebate and the program still has funding, buy before the end of the fiscal year or before the next legislative session — programs get cut or capped more often than they get renewed.

State programs are funded by legislatures and can change mid-year. Always verify current funding status and income caps on the state energy office or DOT website before you buy.
